John Punnett (February 16, 1801 – November 15, 1863) was born in London on February 16, 1801, the son of William Punnett, a ship-owner from Rotherhithe. He pursued his education at Clare College, where he was admitted in October 1817 and matriculated in October 1819. Demonstrating notable academic ability in mathematics, he graduated with a BA as the 13th Wrangler in 1823, later earning his MA in 1826. He further contributed to student life at the university by serving as President of the Cambridge Union Society in 1821, and he is recognized as a founding member of the Cambridge Apostles.

Following his academic achievements, Punnett took up a Fellowship at Clare College, which he held from 1826 to 1834. His ecclesiastical career commenced when he was ordained a deacon in 1825 and a priest in 1826. He transitioned into parish ministry, taking on the role of curate at St Columb Major in Cornwall in 1833, and subsequently serving as the vicar of St Erth in Cornwall from 1833 until his death. Alongside his pastoral duties, he engaged in theological writing, publishing works such as Moderation, the Duty and Wisdom of the Church and The Analogy of Faith and the Liturgy of the Church of England.

Punnett married Margaret Sutton, the daughter of Captain Sutton of Flushing, Cornwall, with whom he had issue, including a son named Thomas Fisher Punnett. He passed away on November 15, 1863, at the age of sixty-two at the vicarage in St Erth, Cornwall, with his death also noted in Penzance.
